Heat transfer + DTF (direct-to-film) printing
The modern approach for performance fabrics, low-quantity runs, and full-color photo-real artwork on apparel.
Heat transfer (and its modern cousin DTF / direct-to-film) is the right answer when screen printing won't work: performance fabrics, low quantities, or full-color photo-real artwork.
What it's best for
- Performance / moisture-wicking polyester apparel. Where screen print struggles, DTF excels.
- Low-quantity runs (12-50 pieces). Per-piece cost beats screen print at low quantities since there's no per-color setup.
- Full-color / photo-real artwork on apparel. Print full CMYK with no extra setup fees.
- Mixed-substrate orders. Same transfer can be applied to t-shirts, polos, hoodies, and bags - one design, multiple substrates.
- Names + numbers on sports jerseys. Per-piece variable transfers.
- "Try-it" runs before committing to a screen-print quantity. Lower setup risk.
What it's NOT best for
- Very large quantities (1,000+) on cotton. Screen print becomes more cost-effective.
- Soft-hand premium feel. Heat transfers add a slight stiffness compared to a screen-print water-based ink. Modern DTF is improving but it's still detectable.
- Hard goods. Use UV print or laser engraving.
Pricing model
- Per-piece cost: $3.50-8.00 depending on print size + quantity.
- Setup fee: $0-30 one-time. DTF has minimal setup compared to screen print.
- Color count is free - full CMYK at the same price.
- Variable per-piece artwork at no setup uplift.
Substrates we heat-transfer / DTF on
- Performance polyester (sports apparel, athleisure)
- Cotton + cotton blend t-shirts (when low quantity / full color)
- Hoodies, sweatshirts
- Poly bags + tote bags
- Hat fronts (DTF or leather patch)
- Performance jackets
Common questions
DTF vs heat transfer vinyl - what's the difference?
Heat transfer vinyl (HTV) = pre-cut vinyl heat-pressed onto the garment. Limited to single colors. DTF = full-color CMYK print directly onto a film, then heat-pressed. DTF is the modern preferred approach.
How long does DTF last?
50-80 wash cycles with proper care (cold wash, inside out, no high-heat dryer). Rivals or beats inexpensive screen prints.
Can I do per-name jerseys with DTF?
Yes - per-piece variable transfers, no setup uplift. Common for sports teams + corporate event jerseys.
Does it look like screen print?
Modern DTF is very close. Slight added thickness (the print sits on top vs in the fabric). Visually almost indistinguishable for most logos.
